Website Hosting
What is web hosting and why do I need it?
Once your website has been designed, you need to put it onto a server on the Internet so that people on the Internet can find it. This involves paying a small annual fee to the web hosting company. A server is essentially a computer with a high speed connection, where your website would be stored. This costs money to run, and so you would be charged for this service.
These hosting charges cover the price of renting the space on the web server and for the web bandwidth that your website uses. Bandwidth is the amount of traffic your website receives and thus the amount of data it sends and receives. Most web design companies can advise you on this. This bandwidth is measured in gigabytes (one thousand megabytes) Small websites don’t tend to use much bandwidth, whereas larger and more dynamic websites tend to use large amounts of webspace and bandwidth.
The more your website is used, and hence the more interest you are attracting, the more bandwidth that is used by your website. It also often covers e-mail services, such as POP3 addresses and e-mail forwarders.
